Ground Control Points (GCPs) Explained for Drone Mapping
A ground control point (GCP) is a mark on the ground whose coordinates you measured with survey equipment. In drone mapping it ties the photogrammetric model to the real world: position, orientation and scale. Even with an RTK drone it can remove errors the drone's positions cannot see. This guide explains what GCPs do, how they differ from check points, and where they go wrong.
What a GCP does
Photogrammetry reconstructs a scene from photos, but photos alone do not say where the scene is or how big it is. Control points supply that. Each GCP is visible in several photos; the software adjusts the whole model so that those marks land on their surveyed coordinates.
A GCP is typically a painted or printed target laid on the ground before the flight, or a clear permanent feature, such as a manhole corner, measured with GNSS or a total station in a known coordinate system.
Do I still need GCPs with an RTK or PPK drone?
An RTK or PPK drone writes good positions into its photos, which gives a strong horizontal position. But a systematic offset can remain between the drone's coordinate frame and your ground survey, most often in height; control points remove it, and independent check points measure what is left.
If the deliverable only has to look right, you can skip control. If it must match ground coordinates, especially heights, use control points, or at least check points to measure the offset.
GCPs versus check points
A GCP is used in the adjustment and positions the model. A check point is surveyed in the same way but kept out of the adjustment: afterwards the model's coordinates at that point are compared with the surveyed ones. The error at check points is independent evidence of accuracy; the fit at GCPs is optimistic by construction. A point you do not fully trust should be a check point, not a GCP.
Targets, number and placement
Make targets large enough to see and mark: for automatic marking in Stream Capture the disk should be at least about seven times the GSD across, for example 0.35 to 0.5 m at 4.7 cm GSD. Use high contrast, and survey the centre. Spread points across the site, including near the edges and at different heights, rather than along one line. There is no single magic number: height reconciliation of the surface in Stream Capture needs at least seven control points, and an accuracy class under the ASPRS standard asks for at least 30 independent check points.
Common mistakes
The wrong coordinate system. If the points fall outside the flight area, the GCP file is in a different system from the project. Stream Capture detects this, tries the region's other projection systems and suggests the one that fits.
Mixing height types. Ellipsoidal heights and heights above a geoid differ by tens of metres in many places. State which your file uses, and convert with the right geoid model.
Using every point as control. If every surveyed point is forced into the adjustment, nothing is left to prove the result.
Frequently asked questions
What is a ground control point in photogrammetry?
A point on the ground with coordinates measured by survey equipment, visible in the photos, used to position, orient and scale the photogrammetric model in a real coordinate system.
How many GCPs do I need for drone mapping?
There is no single number. More, well-spread points give a more reliable result; Stream Capture's vertical reconciliation needs at least seven, and an ASPRS accuracy class statement asks for at least 30 independent check points.
What is the difference between a GCP and a check point?
A GCP is used in the adjustment. A check point is not: it is compared with the finished model and gives independent proof of accuracy.
How big should GCP targets be?
For automatic marking, at least about seven times the GSD across: 0.35 to 0.5 m at 4.7 cm GSD. Smaller targets are still found, but their marks are noisier.
Can I do drone mapping without GCPs?
Yes. With RTK or PPK positions you get strong horizontal accuracy, and with a consumer drone you still get a consistent map; but absolute position and especially height are better with control points.
