Make a Textured 3D Model from Drone Photos

Stream Capture meshes the dense cloud into a surface model and wraps it with a texture chosen photo by photo from the views that see each patch best. The model is georeferenced and exports as OBJ or GLB, with a compressed GLB option for the web.

Stream Capture is in development and not released yet. At launch it will come in the same download as its sister program Stream Terrain; today's download contains Stream Terrain.

What is a 3D model made from drone photos?

It is a triangle mesh built from the dense point cloud, textured with the photos themselves. Unlike an orthophoto, which is a flat top-down map, the model keeps the shape of slopes, stockpiles and structures and can be turned around on screen.

Stream Capture builds a surface mesh and, by default, a full 3D surface mesh that can follow walls and overhangs. The dense surface that mesh is built from is the same one the DSM and orthophoto use.

Best-view texture atlas

Each chart takes its colour from the photo that sees it best, judged by projected area, how central it is in the frame and sharpness. Charts are colour-balanced across seams. This is the default texture.

More than one texture page

A texture that does not fit one sheet is spread across up to four pages instead of being shrunk, up to 8192 pixels on a side by default.

OBJ and GLB

Export the model as OBJ or as GLB. A Draco-compressed GLB is available for smaller web files, and every GLB has a georeference file mapping local coordinates to your coordinate system.

Mesh from the DSM when you want it

Build the mesh from the DSM raster instead of the cloud for a clean 2.5D terrain surface, or switch the full 3D mesh off if a surface is enough.

Orthophoto texture for speed

The older single-image orthophoto texture is still available: it is quicker but stretches on steep faces.

How to make a 3D model from drone photos

  1. 1

    Add photos with strong overlap

A model is only as good as the views it was built from; photos taken at a mix of angles around a structure give better walls than a straight top-down grid.

  2. 2

    Tick 3D Mesh

It is in the products list of the Output step. The Mesh + Texture stage follows the Dense Cloud stage.

  3. 3

Process and open the textured view

Switch the view to the mesh or the textured model (keys 2 and 3) to inspect it.

  4. 4

    Export

OBJ or GLB from the Export Center, with the georeference file beside the GLB.

Supported formats

OBJ

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a 3D model from drone photos?

Process overlapping photos in photogrammetry software that builds a dense cloud and a textured mesh. In Stream Capture tick 3D Mesh, process, and export OBJ or GLB.

Is the model georeferenced?

Yes. It is built in a local frame and a sidecar file maps it to the output coordinate system, so it can be placed in a GIS or 3D viewer at the right location.

What is the difference between the model and the orthophoto?

The orthophoto is a flat, measurable map. The model keeps the 3D shape and can be viewed from any angle; use the orthophoto and DSM for measurement, the model for presentation and inspection.

Can it handle walls and overhangs?

The full 3D surface mesh can follow vertical faces if photos saw them. Straight top-down photos see very little of a wall, so add oblique photos where walls matter.

Which 3D viewers open the output?

GLB opens in web 3D viewers and most 3D software; OBJ with its material file opens almost everywhere.
